The Soul Pyre Sept System

The Soul Pyre, in addition to its promotional ranks, also divides itself into groups defined as Septs. Each Sept represents a general series of activities and responsibilities that correspond to the dominant tendencies of the members' playstyles. Members choose their desired Sept based on the aspect that appeals to them to most. Some players enjoy exploration and the challenge of solving Area Quests; others prefer PVP, and others still lean towards a more socially outgoing lifestyle. We aim to provide a place for all walks of play.

The basic process for joining a Sept is fairly simple. During their probationary period, new members (Septics) should take time to speak with other clan members and find out what life in each Sept is like. At the end of their first month, alongside their first promotion, Septics are expected to know what Sept they want to join. At this point, they apply to the Elder of that Sept, who will then conduct a brief interview and perhaps test their skills in the Sept's area of expertise, and deliver either acceptance or rejection. In the case of the latter, the Elder will generally advise the member on what other Sept may better suit them.

The Kli-Yeth - Those who Fight

History:

The Kli-Yeth were given the most freedom to pass the gift of Eleos (Eleos is difficult in translation. The literal meaning is mercy, but it was often taken to mean murder). To the Kli-yeth Sept fell the duty of leading the armies of Lai'Arder in battle. They were the Officers and before each campaign, they would vie for the postition of Agonas Archontas (Mirakus tells us the literal translation is Master of Battle, or Master of Agony, but it is left as is since it's a formal title). To the victor fell the task of slipping through the guards of the other great cities to steal copies of the artifacts they were producing for study by the Selaryn and Noimosyn.

C'me here, and I'll show you how ambush works when you don't want to see how archery does

-Siris, Eld Saerios of The Kli-Yeth

Reality:

This Sept is primarily reserved for those whose enjoyment of Aardwolf derives from killing other players. They have a tendency to focus upon that aspect of gameplay and become obsessed with the intricacies of PvP. Often seen stalking passersby as a source of entertainment, waiting for an opportunity to arise. They may even be dangerous sociopaths in the real world - One can only hope!

Sept Entry Guidelines

  • Must exhibit an understanding of basic PVP concepts
  • Must bear a lust for the blood of others
  • Understand the concept of honour in PvP and behave accordingly.
  • Additional requirements at the Elder's discretion

  • Guide other members in the intricacies of PVP technique.
  • Be on-hand to defend the honour of other members whenever it may be slighted!

The Dal'ken - Those who Protect

History:

The Dal'ken originally sprang from members of Sept Kli-Yeth who felt that rather than killing others, one could gain their trust by protecting them. A favor that is owed is a favor that will be claimed. Another of their purposes was the support of the forward armies of the Pyre that were in the field. Along with the Selaryn they prepared antidotes and restoratives to be sent ahead to the troops.

You fetch me coffee and when we get raided you fetch me heads.

-Derar, Former Eld Saerios of The Dal'ken

Reality:

Dal'ken essentially put the security of the clan ahead of all personal goals. These players tier only when a personal agreement to rotate with another member has been made. They spend significant periods of time at SH, accumulating HP & instincts to the extent that it becomes an obsessive compulsive disorder. They know exactly what is required of them in order to make an impact in the modern game at SH and put the necessary work in to get there.

The ideal Dal'ken member will turn up in the middle of the night to participate in defence of our hall and those of our allies. They are also expected to actively participate in raiding whenever possible. In short, they're either incredibly stubborn, enjoy anything involving a clan maze or are just simply Australian.

Sept Entry Guidelines

  • Must be willing to sit at 200/201 to defend the clan
  • Must be willing to drop all other mud activities to participate in defense if at SH
  • Must exhibit an understanding of basic clan maze concepts.
  • Additional requirements at the Elder's discretion

  • Constantly seek ways to improve our maze/defensive strategy.
  • Mentor interested members from other septs in the art of defending.
  • Evaluate what's necessary to enact a successful defense against a raid, communicate to and coordinate other clan members or outside defenders where necessary.
  • In tandem with the Kli-Yeth, be on-hand to aid other members when they are attacked by other players.

The Order of Noimosyn - Those who Study

History:

Sept Noimosyn (indeed the family of Mirakus' ancestry) had been devoted to the study of their surroundings and the doings of others. They watched and listened to the doings of those who came as emissary to Lai'Arder to glean every bit of knowledge they could about the enemies of the city, who were indeed numerous. It was they who counseled The Rasha'yad on the stances of the other cities towards Lai'Arder so that courses of action might be chosen wisely. Knowledge is power and Knowledge used is the key to dominion.

I know there is a hidden drow bar in this area. There is always one.

-Soleila, Former Eld Saerios of The Order of Noimosyn

Reality:

Has developed an obsessive compulsive disorder towards area exploration. Sometimes spending hours looking for that one last #%!&?! room.

Investigates the quirks of non-combat related skills and spells - Just because they're there!

Takes a subarea like Xyl's Mosaic and is quick to define it as 'a non-linear triple helix with protein marker-like intersections.'- Instead of just getting lost.

Sept Entry Guidelines

  • A Minimum of 70% of the MUD explored.
  • At least 15 Area Goals complete.
  • Be able to make information available to other members in a concise, easily comprehensible format
  • Requirements may be waived at the Elder's discretion

  • Study the patterns of other clans and their members, seeking any information that may be useful to the clan

The Order of Selarys - Those who Create

History:

It was recognized by The Progenitors that one of the main keys to corrupting others was greed. The Selarys not only helped to create items to strengthen the power of Brotherhood, but also to be sold to others to enlarge the coffers of Lai'Arder. The item given is worth twice as much as the item sold. Not only were their skills of use in creating artifacts, but also in healing. The Order of Selarys was charged with keeping those of the Pyre in health and their discoveries in conjunction with the Noimosyn led to curatives and elixirs that greatly prolonged life. Those of House Selarys could be said to have the most hands-on use of Brotherhood, using their skills with the Taint in making their items. Theirs was the design and if their ideas were accepted, they became.

Sometimes summoning the darkness means purging the light within yourself.

-Purr, Eld Saerios of The Order of Selarys

Reality:

In order to keep Pyre fresh we need to add new content from time to time. This could in the form be new EQ. Working closely with Noimosyn who find good builds for eq Selarys properly decorate it with our Pyre flavor. In other cases we need new web content. This also falls to the Selarys to take care of as well.

*Cough*

All that being said we must also keep a Level head for criticism of our work

Sept Entry Guidelines

  • Must show an appreciable creative spark
  • Must display knowledge and affinity with upgrade processes
  • Must be able to accept criticism regarding their work
  • Additional requirements at the Elder's discretion

  • Producing creative content for our website.
  • Creating mobs and room descs for both our open and closed halls.

The Patria Pseutes - Those who Listen

History:

It was expected that in a community so based on corruption that arguments would arise. To the Pseutes fell the duty of mediation. They saw themselves not as one of the Septs or Order, but as a Family. They helped to settle disputes between individuals as well as those between the Septs. They were granted the title of Father and Mother (Pater and Mater in the old form). Those Who Listen will be trusted. They often worked in conjunction with Houses Noimosyn and Vortaim in seeking knowledge from others and in going about interacting with people.

There's a tenebrous abyss between never saying a thing and keeping one's counsel.

-Blight, Former Eld Saerios of The Patria Pseutes

Reality:

In any clan, disputes may happen. Most of those will be resolved on their own, but occasionally tempers flare up and people take it personally. This is where Patria Pseutes steps in, to try to prevent explosions and strive for a peaceful solution. Listening is harder than it sounds, because it usually involves not talking for a while. Knowing oneself, patience and trustworthiness are three keystones on which a Pseutes member's dark soul should be built. Ideally a member has been active in the Soul Pyre for at least six months. Suggestions that improve the clan atmosphere often come out of this Sept.

Sept Entry Guidelines

  • Must be of trustworthy character
  • Must be wise in the ways of people, so as to advise effectively
  • Must be patient and willing to listen to and resolve problems
  • Must be able to maintain an objective perspective
  • Additional requirements at the Elder's discretion

Activities

  • Resolve disputes between members of the clan with objectivity
  • Failing successful resolution, pass on as much useful information as possible to leaders regarding the incident, and suggest resolution
  • Maintain an active watch over members of the clan, and take steps as necessary to prevent the explosion of disputes before they occur
  • Report to the leadership regarding any unrest within the clan, and suggest changes to policy that would improve the clan atmosphere

The Vortaim - The Many who Speak with One Voice

History:

Even in a community as open as that of The Soul Pyre there were people who were afraid to speak out in fear of reprimand. Indeed under the leaders that came after Ilithios many were cast out merely for speaking their mind. Such was not the way of The Progenitors. The Vortaim had existed so that any that feared speaking their mind to the leaders could act through proxy. Ten acting as one are stronger than one thousand acting each alone. Sept Vortaim often worked with The Patria Pseutes in resolving disputes and in speaking with and insuring the comfort of those in the Soul Pyre. Brotherhood was indeed strong within them for they knew the strongest ways to bring about unity.

You are the birdie on Sorrow's shoulder.

-Moradin, Eld Saerios of The Vortaim

Reality:

Working in Vortaim means being charismatic and overall able to get along in public situations. They must be able to keep their cool, control their words and know when to be silent. Vortaim will scout alliances and recruits by simply being social and able to convey accurate and reliable information to the clan. They will often work with Selarys and Pseutes to broker alliances or run public events. An interest in social activities such as raiding, epic quests or simply grouping for exp/company is a must. This is not a sept for the introvert.

Sept Entry Guidelines

  • Must be able to speak with eloquence and dignity
  • Must have an understanding of the intricate paths of diplomacy
  • Must have a keen sense of social tendencies
  • Must be able to react quickly to any social situation
  • Additional requirements at the Elder's discretion

"Peace be upon you" is another way of wishing death upon your enemies. The only peace is in death, the only serenity is in succumbing to the frigid embrace of Sorrow just before the flames take your soul.
